As you likely know, I am very passionate about helping kids learn about nutrition and healthy eating. I have recently starting volunteering at a fantastic organization called Sprouts Cooking Club based out of Oakland. They partner with Jamie Oliver, a celebrity Chef and active family health advocate, and boast Alice Waters as an advisor. I am thrilled to be working with this incredible organization, started by UC Berkeley graduate Karen Rogers in 2006. Sprouts provides after school cooking classes, weekend classes, week-long camps, birthday parties, and other special events. However, the most impressive piece of their organization is the Chef In Training Program. They offer an internship to Bay Area disadvantaged youth an opportunity to work with real Chefs mastering their skills, then they receive job placement assistance from Sprouts staff to help them find a sustainable job in the restaurant industry! I have joined this organization because I believe there is a real lack of education among children and their parents about what is considered “healthy” and where our food comes from, and how to prepare it. And, what better way to get kids excited about food than to have them learn how to cook in commercial kitchens from real Chefs?
